The creator suggests a very simple system in this video too with 2d6. 1-3 is fail, 4-8 is success, and 9-12 is great success. That’s it!

I’ve had good success with “No Thank You Evil” for mixed age groups like that, it provides a differentiated play experience for kids so that your 4 year old and your 8 year old can both be equally engaged. You can reskin the setting if you feel it wouldn’t resonate with your kids (though the default has worked fine with mine).
