Personally considering subscribing

Nice space! I’ve been following Adrian Tomine’s newsletter as the first Substack Writer in Residence. I think it’s just for the month of Oct tho~ https://adriantomine.substack.com/about

Initially I just wanted a place to keep track of everyone that was moving, but then I started following certain creators on Patreon and figured I’d try to get a collection of people creating comics outside the typical publishing machine.

Saladin Ahmed

Jonathan Hickman + Mike Del Mundo + Mike Huddleston

Brian K. Vaughn & Niko Henrichon

Scottie Young

Please add suggestions of other creators working outside the typical system to be included below.

One saving grace is, I believe every single one has mentioned every book released through Substack will see a print run eventually.

Tom King & Elsa Charretier

James Tynion IV

And I get that a big appeal or selling point is being able to access more than just comics, but the WIP, the discussion, access to the creators, etc.

It’s on the level of DC Universe and Marvel Unlimited, but for just books from basically one creative team (although there are some that will deliver more).

Molly Knox Ostertag

So really, these are for the super fans of the creators.

Some Thoughts

Wasn’t sure what to call the space...

Chip Zdarsky

So again, this is more like an early access deal.

Also probably need a better way to organize...

Comic Publishing

Suggestions

Substack has made a push recently into the comics publishing game. There was an initial announcement of four comic creators starting paid newsletters with Substack grants and more have followed.

Overall, the pricing seems a bit extreme and unsustainable.

Still though, this is crowdfunding, and typically, since more revenue goes directly to the creator, and you are funding the creation, you should be paying less per comic, not more.
