In this system, you level by taking risks - when you get hit down to 0; you roll scar table, this can be beneficial depending on results
How do you level HP or stats?
. If you fail the critical damage save, you are basically out of the fight and going to die if not stabilized. In the original Cairn this is sort of left to the table to decide, depending on the kind of wound, how perilous the situation is, and how much time/materials are available.
When HP = 0; Roll each time STR is effected
When you are down to 0; 1 hour to stay alive and get aid - else... ⚰️
If an item has strange properties or magic - these are considered Relics in CAIRN- due to its unknown or known origins; hence found in adventures/dungeons/rewards
A shield not listed, say a giant shield/tower shield - would logically be +2 or +3 armor, and due to its size - bulky.
Now you can reskin armor/weapons; and/or suggest unique to suit your character and backstory. The above image is more traditional flavour of items, but if say .... your shield was a bone shield or a plank of wood. that works; just honor the logic/reasonable - So they would be 1+ armor
Scrolls are similar to Spellbooks, however:
- They do not take up an inventory slot.
- They do not cause fatigue.
- They disappear after one use.
Spellbooks contain a single spell and take up one slot. They cannot be transcribed or created; instead they are recovered from places like tombs, dungeons, and manors.

``` INVENTORY ```
Characters have a total of 10 inventory slots: a backpack with six slots, one slot for each hand, and two slots for their upper body (such as the belt, chest, or head). The backpack can also double as an emergency sleeping bag but only if emptied of its contents.
Most items take up one slot, and small items can be bundled together. Slots are abstract and can be rearranged per the Warden’s discretion.
Bulky items take up two slots and are typically two-handed or awkward to carry. Anyone carrying a full inventory (i.e. filling all 10 slots) is reduced to 0 HP.
Deaths door
There is a Scar mechanic if you get hit by 2 exactly based on your characters HP- which triggers the scar table
Nah, in this system HP acts more like a temp health before bringing you down (Videogame terms). It’s more abstract - like your ability to Dodge before it actually hurts
The system has reduction in primary stats; vs traditional HP in D&D and videogames - and recovered at a extended rest (long rest in D&D terms)
PCs roll a d20 for an appropriate ability score. If they roll equal to or under that ability score, they pass. Otherwise, they fail. A 1 is always a success, and a 20 is always a failure.
Character has 13 DEX, Roll Equal or under that DEX score to pass
Eg: if you like to have some private items; sheets in public, the other players shouldn’t try probe knowing that hidden/public info ahead of time - that’s considered “metagaming” and is sort of a no-no in roleplaying space. Breaks the mystery and the chance for roleplay for that reveal.
So our character stat sheets are secret to other players ?
Question to the group
Okay. I’ll be a little bias here as I’m adjacent to the indie TTRPG space.... so here is my selections - Most are hacks; or you can see them as “Mods” in videogame lingo
A place for players to chat, share interests, and bond outside of the game.
I didnt - looked a bit into dnd a few months back bc i wanted to play it but never got people to do so
can i share this space with my friend so he can see what kind of options there are? hes kinda unsure rn but maybe he gets a taste from these
The cool thing about this is ... is visual; you can theoretically be able to split parties / timelines 🫨 - but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it.
Don’t know about tracking days yet, might be nice - it’s a bit of a chore; done in chat, but with cards/boxes it could be a cool feature.
Scene title; I think I’ll keep it ??? if we haven’t established the location in roleplay; or keep it vague and abstract
This is more for the character focus mode of play, and those who want to explore that aspect; which is also unique to TTRPG as your creating and influencing the game in real time.
Friends of Kinopio TTRPG edition
So Cairn would be closer to what you’d imagine TTRPG to be; Very fantasy based - and going by my gamestyle its low fantasy; humour, sometime gritty - which seems like everyones response so this is great.
Lets go with this! it’s free so folks can download the rules
With that comment card; honour system not peak; but also not game breaking so... .🤷♂️
Some players like it private, that way they can reveal details when necessary; The GM/warden may need view to make sure character and story flow - but other PC’s need not see. Helps for setting up though.
This is part of the TTRPG experience, we can collaborate in the world setting and that what makes each game unique. Also within reason(else it becomes a feverdream; unless that’s you all want as the experience)
Yes, the names and features are just guides - feel free to customise how you like. Only time a game master would restrict this is to keep the “world” consistent with lore etc - but I’m flexible and welcome it. The characters made by players would set the tone/buy-in for that fictional world.
Fatigue
A) Weapon held deals 1D4
When a fatigue is marked on a slot that occupies a slot?
Yup - Unlike videogames - what you imagine/prompt/experiment can be stored/created in your backpack or other contraption within logical reason.
in the Roleplaying sense this also will slow your movement down; and or put a target on yourself if your carrying treasure in plain sight (depending on the world/scene)
Example: Usually you can hire/buy mules,donkeys to hold extra slots for you. This is all well and good but logically they won’t go into ... a dungeon or underwater; so in this case you need to hire someone to be a guard outside (preferable someone who won’t get robbed; or would they be the robber? )
This is by game deign - so you have to logically think if the item is worth holding, and prevents item hoarding like D&D (Bag of holding)
Keep in mind 2 slots are taken by rations and a torch as starting gear - which is needed to fight fatigue + see in the dark
Roll once on each of the Starting Gear tables to determine your PC’s armor, weapons, tools, and equipment. If indicated, roll on the Spellbooks table with a d100 (or roll 2d10, using one die as the ones place, and the other as the tens place). Pick only one item for each result.
The standard is rolling and getting one per category, unless specified :
I’ll break down the things to keep in mind
Do starting items take up inventory slots, does armor and weapons take up slots? Do i get all 3 starting weapons or do i have to choose one?
i will do this!! im focused on drawing them first but after that ill get on this too
Resurrection within a timeframe, or necromancy at a cost. ()
Old school = Death is just another round; Rogue like games
Character focus = Death feels personal; there is no coming back unless system/world/story allows.
The other mode, which is a bit more old school - is just being “Barry the bandit; I hate snakes and I love me some treasure” and on you go…. As your enjoyment is the exploring and delving into dungeons / loot collecting. Rather than characters development or lineage thread.
I will have to work with all of you to make sure the Backstory Integration fits with the world. weaving personal plot hooks, relationships and motivations
Get to know the rules and game system
Shield (+1 Armor)
Brigandine (2nd slot)
Brigandine (1 Armor, bulky)
Inventory
Backstory (small)
Physique/Voice: Stout:/Squeeky
Ambitious/Greedy
Oddball/Abandoned
It just helps, but never forced. (That’s called railroading)
Bonus: Plot hooks are actually optional in TTRPG - you as a group can actually roleplay and come up with something on your own; As a gamemaster I’ll have to try figure out how I can make that happen.
Again mode of play - you can just be interested for a particular quest from a personal/fun perspective. The bonus is if you can become in sync & empathic with your character choices and motivations. A chance to explore another life/perspective to the world.
Both valid; and I’ll try marry both when we play. Being play by post - its an easier task, as no one is to improv on the spot - you have hours to cobble a response :)
So after background; we need to work out WHY... you guys are together.
Introduction via the classic “Tavern “scene
It’s much easier to already have a scenario where you all have agreed upon; a single mission / goal - VS an awkward dance of trying to introduce each other, then suddenly banding together; not to say it cannot work. and I’d be down if you all want to experience it that way as well.
They are storyline seeds/goals that drives your reasons on engaging the world/adventure. Those tend to align with the characters backstory and traits; that influences motivation
I’ll set a couple options to choose for plot hook alignment. Let me know if you need that explained; actually I just do it now lol -
Step three: ♪┏(°.°)┛┗(°.°)┓┗(°.°)┛┏(°.°)┓ ♪ - The dance of goals and teamwork -AKA: SeSSion Zer0
How to start?
Optional because sometimes, backstory changes once you play; but does serve as good character scaffolding
Optional Step: Create Backstory (Character focus)
` Some players like the organic flow of the game to reveal their backstory - this shapes characters with conversation in-game and thus shapes your backstory as you interact with players and the world.
Though, with reason! You cannot say you have a dying uncle that has couriered you large amounts of wealth all of a sudden when you are low on gold.
This is optional, but a good exercise if you find the time. Give’s you a little more buy-in for your character and shapes them a little - which makes it easier to roleplay/improv.
I advise to write it outside of here, incase it gets personal; then if you feel comfortable sharing - Card it as a comment, so you still have privacy and we’ll honor it by not peaking :) - Also this is also in public eyes 🐸✌️
But its your sheet - there’s no rule; just as long as you can track it
Plus you don’t mess the aligning 2,3 cards in a row
I prefer Humdrums item slots; makes adding and tracking easier on the one card ✌️ edit: I added it checkboxes to your ; But.... it strikes it out.... 🤔 which isn’t visually great
All these are optional; just nice to know, more of a safety check.
Question: Time zone? - altho doesnt really matter
going bed will add more in tomorrow - thanks for the answers
But you are also a cat. I’ll concession it that you’re fine in the low light; makes less sense to carry a torch but in some cases you do if its pitch black
Metagaming can disrupt narrative flow and diminish role-playing authenticity. Game masters often set rules to encourage players to focus on their characters’ perspectives.
Player vs. Character Intentions: Making decisions that benefit the player rather than the character. For example, investigating an area because the player suspects a trap, despite the character having no reason to be suspicious based on their perspective.
Predicting Plot Points: Anticipating story developments based on narrative patterns or past game experiences, and acting on these predictions, rather than having characters react naturally based on in-game knowledge and experiences.
In tabletop role-playing games (TTRPGs), “metagaming” refers to the use of knowledge or information that a player possesses but their character would not logically have within the context of the game world. This can affect the game in various ways, often breaking immersion or fairness:
Out-of-Character Knowledge: Using information from game manuals or previous campaigns that a character wouldn’t know. For instance, knowing a monster’s weakness from past play and exploiting it, even if the character has no in-game reason to know this.
In CAIRN, there is no traditional level system. Instead, your progress is determined by your actions and decisions. Growth in this game mode comes from what you do and think during play, not from milestones or experience points (XP).
can i just throw stuff out i dont need right now?
Technically yes - but you forgo 3 slots or more - You can hold only 10 slots - filling all 10 slots your HP drops to 0
Since this is done in Kinopio, I’ll also lean on what you think works best; but I’ll try translate what I prep in my experience into here and see .... eg: Should characters sheets be jpegs ? But I’m keen to see if I can convert the Cairn character sheet into cards; ` that way you can adapt
So if there’s cat folk; then we would ask … are these common? No one’s going to question a cat walking into town etc; and that ripples to player role play and world setting
can i give my little guy their own name instead of rolling?
Most systems have a summary of rules you need to keep in mind to make the experience smoother - so I’ve attached it here:
The online CAIRN System Reference Document (SRD)
Paste any questions as headings, and I can try answer things as best I can; this could help others as well - our very own FAQs :)
If our comfortable: go and make a character - If I haven’t created an area for this yet - you can fill in digitally and paste it in; but I’ll try now.... so it be a WIP sheet
Question time II: Modes
What generation are you from?
Do we dice roll here; in person (honour system)
Yeah go for it 🤝
Do you have any experience with Play by post, chat role play or Forum play?
What kind of tone do you prefer for the game? (e.g., serious, humorous, dark, lighthearted)
So I don’t dislike it; but I’m not great with roleplay when it comes to.... romance... Which doesn’t really come up; but quite upfront with it. In games that have that theme - The way to go about it - I state: off scene; or something similar in film
Are there any particular story elements you enjoy or dislike?
All of them sound good, i wanna make my little character and play as them so id say roleplay is important for me
all sound good to me, maybe role-playing is first for me
What is your preferred play style? (e.g., role-playing, combat-focused, puzzle-solving, etc.)
like once or twice many years ago
Have you played any TTRPGs before? If so, which ones?
I can never gather my thoughts - is it fine if i mention that something is uncomfortable to me when it comes up? - altho im usually fine with most things
Are there any themes or content you’d like to avoid?
Preferences and Boundaries
None :(
I’ve played balders gate 3 (although I didn’t beat it cuz it took forever)
